Using Off Camera Lighting

I learn more about car photography everyday and the techniques of adding off camera lighting is one that I am very excited about. A few weeks ago, a client asked me to come to his home and shoot his new 2023 Corvette. I decided that this would be a great time to use off camera lighting. I arrived before sunrise and positioned the orange corvette in the driveway of his auto barn with his home in the distant background. As the sun was rising, I positioned my camera low off the driver side front wheel and set up my speedlight on a stand with an umbrella. Keeping the camera stationary, I placed the light to illuminate the rear quarter of the car and took the shot. Next I moved the light to the door and took the shot and then to the front quarter for the final shot. In Photoshop, I blended the 3 photos together to create what I think is a very nice composition.

If you haven’t tried off camera lighting when photographing cars., give it a shot.
